Check to make sure the power switch to the furnace is in the on position, The switch looks like a normal light switch, and is usually located in the furnace room, sometimes on the ceiling or on the wall. You can also check the main breaker panel to make sure the breaker has not tripped.
A dirty filter will cause the furnace to overheat, and prevent or slow down air flow to the house, if found to be dirty it should be replaced or cleaned . Do not operate the furnace without a filter as this will cause damage to the furnace.
Check to make sure the Gas Shtoff Valve to the furnace is in the on position
If your furnace is an older furnace it may vent into a chimney, in this case you need to check to make sure there is no blockage i.e birds nest, animals etc
In newer furnaces you need to check that the drain line is clear and not clogged
Check to make sure air is flowing out of the registers, and that they are in the open position
New High Efficiency furnaces vent through the side wall of the house , check to make sure the vents are not blocked
Make sure the thermostat is set in the Heat mode and the temperature is set higher than the room temperature, most digital thermostats work on batteries so check them as well.
